Mogpog, Marinduque, Philippines — A resounding success, showcasing the rich traditions and stories of the province was held on November 25, 2024, at Marinduque State University – Extramural Study Center (MarSU-MESC) with the vibrant culminating activity of BookNook Marinduque themed “Kalutang: Exploring the Rhythmic Heritage of Marinduque’s Culture”.

Organized by the students of the Bachelor of Arts in Language Studies (BAELS) and Bachelor of Science in Social Work (BSSW) programs, under the guidance of their professor, Dr. Randy T. Nobleza, the event highlighted the essence of Marinduque’s cultural heritage through various performances and presentations.

The program commenced with a warm welcome from the Center Administrator, Mr. Jerick C. Jornadal, who emphasized the importance of community initiatives like BookNook in preserving and promoting the region’s rich cultural identity. Adding to the significance of the event, a message from the Dean of the College of Arts and Social Sciences was read by Dr. Randy T. Nobleza. The Dean’s words resonated with the theme, inspiring the students and audience to embrace and celebrate their cultural heritage.

The students of BAELS and BSSW took center stage with their creative presentations. Their performances included Island Shorts, a series of skits that depicted local stories and traditions; heartfelt renditions of folk songs that resonated with the island’s spirit; and a presentation of the Heritage Reader, a compilation that celebrated Marinduque’s history and literature. These performances not only entertained but also provided a platform for students to engage deeply with their cultural roots. Through these creative mediums, the audience was reminded of the province’s unique identity and the importance of its preservation for future generations.

More than just a celebration, the activity served as an educational journey for the students. It helped them understand the significance of Marinduque’s culture and history, fostering a sense of pride and responsibility in preserving their heritage. This event was a testament to the collaborative efforts of the Marinduque State University community, particularly the dedication of its students and faculty. It also underscored the crucial role of programs like BookNook in nurturing literacy and cultural awareness among young minds.
