Boac, Marinduque, Philippines — The Marinduque State University through its Research and Extension Department and College of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences held a two-day training workshop on Scientific Writing and Publication on October 9-10, 2024 at the university’s University Lounge. The activity aimed to enhance the research and writing capabilities of participants from various academic and scientific backgrounds.

Originally intended for faculty members of the College of Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences, the activity was later extended to include faculty from various colleges across the university due to the excellent and credible credentials of the resource speaker, making it a valuable opportunity for a wider academic audience.

The workshop commenced at around 9 a.m., with Dr. Doreen R. Mascarenas as the host, guiding participants through the preliminaries, including an invocation and the national anthem.

The welcoming remarks were delivered by Dr. Ma. Edelwina Blase, followed by an overview and purpose of the training provided by Regie F. Mampusti, faculty of CFAS. The training highlights the importance of scientific writing in the dissemination of knowledge.

University President Dr. Diosdado P. Zulueta delivered an inspirational message, urging participants to publish more research. He emphasized that publishing benefits not only the university and society, but also contributes to personal growth for the faculty members. His words underscored the importance of scholarly work in advancing both individual careers and the institution’s reputation.

Dr. Paloma de Chavez introduced the resource speaker, Dr. Mudjekeewis D. Santos, a renowned fisheries scientist and the first-ever Filipino to be conferred the Scientist V rank under the Scientific Career System. Dr. Santos has made significant contributions to fisheries science, genetics, and climate change adaptation, among other fields. He is the pioneer behind the Fisheries Vulnerability Assessment Tool (FishVool) and leads the NFRDI-Genetic Fingerprinting Laboratory, the top fisheries genetics lab in the Philippines. He has authored over 100 scientific works and played a key role in the transformation of The Philippine Journal of Fisheries into a world-class, Scopus-indexed journal.

For the whole day, Dr. Santos conducted in-depth sessions on how to write proposals and effectively pitch ideas. He also shared practical tips on writing publishable articles for reliable academic journals. His extensive experience in scientific publishing provided participants with invaluable insights into the nuances of writing and preparing high-quality research for publication.
